But at least Square Enix's next big action RPG confirms DirectStorage from launch.
The full PC system requirements for Forspoken(opens in new tab), Square Enix's next big action RPG, have been released. Minimum requirements are mercifully modest if occasionally nonsensical, starting with at least Nvidia GTX 1060 or AMD RX 5500 XT graphics. Interestingly, DirectStorage support has also been confirmed from launch.
Entry-level requirements on the CPU side start with AMD's Ryzen 5 1600 from about six years ago or Intel's similarly aged Core i7 3770. You'll need at least 16GB of RAM and 150GB of storage. All this brings you the rather modest result of 30 fps at only 720p resolution. You.
Square Enix reckons you'll need at least an AMD RX 6700 XT (opens in new tab) or Nvidia RTX 3070 (opens in new tab) to hit 30fps at 1440p, which is quite a step up. CPU specs are bumped up to AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or Intel Core i7 8700K, while the recommended RAM spec is a slightly implausible 24GB for this performance level.
For the full 4K@60fps experience you should use AMD RX 6800 XT (opens in new tab) or Nvidia RTX 4080 (opens in new tab), which is a rather strange equivalence in terms of GPU performance. You know, because these GPUs are not equivalent at all.
However, it's arguably some of the other tidbits in the accompanying release that are of more interest. For starters, Microsoft's DirectStorage technology is listed as a Day One feature. You don't even need a state-of-the-art NVMe SSD to try it, although one is recommended.
Elsewhere in the feature list, it mentions "customizable resolutions, aspect ratios, and graphics capabilities" along with specific support for ultrawide monitors with a 32:9 aspect ratio.
Also on the list is "Auto HDR", which should mean you don't have to toggle HDR in the Windows settings dialog before launching Forspoken, which is a small grace.
All of this means we're pretty excited for the January 24th release date of Forspoken to really see how it fares on PC.
